The Philosophy of the T4M Club is simple. We believe that every member can make a difference in the life of another. We are Star Throwers. Our insignia is the starfish, inspired by the famous story by Loren Eisley. The smallest deed has a ripple effect and changes not only the life it touches, but can spread across our community making the world a little kinder. We would like to share with you the story that inspired all of us.

The Star Thrower

Once upon a time there was a writer. He liked to go to the beach before he began his writing each day. One day he was walking along the shore and as he looked down the beach, he saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself to think of someone who would dance to the day. So he began to walk faster to catch up. As he got closer, he saw that it was a young man and he was not dancing as he first thought. Instead he was reaching down to the shore, picking up something and very gently throwing it into the ocean.

As he got closer, he called out "Good morning! What are you doing?" The young man paused, looked up and replied "Throwing the starfish into the ocean?"

"The sun is up and the tide is going out. And if I don't throw them in, they'll die."

"But young man, don't you realize that there are miles and miles of beach and the starfish are all along it? You can't possibly make a difference!"

The young man listened politely, bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it into the sea, past the breaking waves. "It made a difference for that one!"

His response surprised the man. He was upset. He didn't know how to reply. So instead, he turned away and walked back to the cottage to begin his writings.

But words did not come. The image of the young man haunted him. He tried to ignore it, but the vision persisted. Finally he realized that what the young man was doing was choosing not to be an observer in the universe and make a difference. The writer went back to the beach, found the young man and spent the rest of the day throwing starfish into the ocean. While in the grand scale of things what he was doing looked small and perhaps insignificant, for the starfish he was able to reach, he made a difference.

And this is our quest. For each of us to seek out our own starfish - and one day hopefully if we need it, we will have our very own star thrower.
